Job Searching Safely
It's almost unreal to think that answering an ad for a job (or otherwise) could possibly end in murder. According to the latest headlines a murder victim was killed when she responded to an online ad, this is exactly what can happen. Back in 2007, another person was killed when she responded to a "Looking for a nanny" ad. Many applicants respond to online classifieds because it's free and you can apply without the typical long application to fill out and complete on company websites.
At one point (years ago) I would have suggested using this as a means for employment opportunity. But, as the years went on and the more "services" that were offered, it became obvious (in my opinion) this list was a means to advertise in more areas than one, for employment. Now whether or not, a crime in the current case has been committed, one thing is for sure, you must be extremely cautious when applying for a job over the internet. Take the time to really read the ad. If there isn't any contact info in the ad, much message is the "employer" sending. You should be able to view a website to read and determine if this is a company worth YOUR time and experience. Is this job in line with your career goals.
It's often said that looking for a job is a job within itself. This may be true...no, it is true. If an employer is seeking that 'perfect' fit for their company, you should carry that same thought. The rewards are much greater when you are in alignment with your career goals. Times are tough, no doubt. But, nothing is more frustrating than spending your time searching miscellaneous job search agents, only to not receive a response or to find out the job is nowhere close to being an option with your experience and pay expectation.
A few pointers:
We all have to start some place in the chain of employment. If the job is perfect, but the salary is, not so perfect, make sure the opportunity is there for advancement. You too, must prove you are worthy of the employers time and money.
Know what you want and know that it is out there. Discouragement is evil when looking for a job in this current economy. Be prepared for everything, including the rejection letter.
Keep your job search going, even after going on an interview or two. Nothing is promised until you've signed the acceptance letter.
Use more than one or two search firms to streamline your efforts and serve a mediator to get you the job you want.
And, as always, think out of your current (corporate) industry. Administrative professionals are needed EVERYWHERE. Here's a great example of thinking out of the box. I once heard a story about a successful business woman whose entrepreneual efforts were falling short of success. Determined to make it, she took a long hard 'look' at what resource can make her money. Through research she found her "ah-ha" idea. Transporting garabage out of the U.S.! That's right. There are not enough land fields for garbarge here (one reason why recycling is so important). Filling that need by transporting trash to other countries that has the space has made this entrepreneur a millionaire in less than 3 years.
Stay focused Administrative Professionals and know that you can rebound from any setback with time, persistence and a "think out of the box" attititude.
